What you will learn on the Advanced Diploma
The Advanced Diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering at Abbey Road Institute Mumbai is organised around three main areas: engineering, music production and music business. Each is broken down into specialist modules that build on one another through the year.
- In Sound Engineering you will cover sound theory, acoustics, microphones, signal flow, gain staging, recording techniques, editing, mixing and mastering, as well as an introduction to live and immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos.
- In Music Production you will work on songwriting, arrangement, orchestration, collaboration, sound design, synthesis, sampling, electronic music production and working with artists and bands in the studio.
- In Music Business you will learn how the contemporary music and audio industry works, from royalties and contracts at a basic level to branding, collaboration, credits and career planning.
You will learn on industry-standard equipment, modern Apple workstations running Pro Tools, Ableton Live and Logic Pro, as well as a wide range of plug-ins and outboard gear. You will be encouraged to spend as much time as possible in the studios. There will be regular ensembles, recording sessions and composition or production workshops help you build your confidence, studio etiquette and communication skills.
The Abbey Road heritage provides context for how recording and production has evolved over time, while Bay Owl Studios gives you a direct connection to today’s commercial workflows and how projects are made in India today.
Progressive Continuous Learning – how we teach
Instead of separating subjects into isolated blocks, we use a progressive continuous learning approach. Modules are designed as short, connected sessions that blend theory, listening and hands-on work in the studio.
This means you might learn about a concept such as phase, mic choice or compression in the morning and apply it in a recording or mixing session the same week, rather than waiting for a future term.
The teaching style is closer to an apprenticeship – you will observe, do, reflect and then repeat, with increasing independence. Over time this builds muscle memory, critical listening and confidence, helping you move more naturally between the roles of producer, engineer and musician.
