Want to learn what it’s like to produce a song from start to finish inside a professional recording studio? Experience this for yourself in one of Mumbai’s most in-demand studios, Bay Owl Studios. Our ‘Song Production Masterclass’ is a 5-day experience that will take you through the entire recording process.

Led by the superbly talented, Grammy-winning record producer, mixer, and engineer, Sylvia Massy, you’ll immerse yourself in each of the stages of recording, mixing and mastering in our commercial studio facilities.

Sylvia Massy’s credits span decades across rock, alternative and pop music, with landmark work including Tool, System of a Down, Johnny Cash, alongside work connected to Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Slayer, Aerosmith, Seal, Paula Abdul, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Zed, and Skunk Anansie. Her wider catalogue also includes projects tied to major artist ecosystems, such as work on Grey Daze (Chester Bennington’s pre-Linkin Park project) and mixes involving performers such as Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses).

She began working professionally in the mid-1980s as a producer, engineer and mixer, before moving from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the late 80s, where her work with Green Jellö led to collaborations with members of Tool and subsequently records such as Opiate and Undertow.

Through the 90s she engineered/produced across major-label projects and collaborated closely with producer Rick Rubin, including work connected to Johnny Cash’s Unchained and System of a Down’s debut. From 1994-2001 her vintage Neve 8038 console and equipment were based at Sound City’s Studio B, where she recorded many major albums there during that period. In 2001 she opened and ran RadioStar Studios in Weed, California until 2012, and today operates primarily from a private home studio in Ashford, Oregon. Her book, Recording Unhinged (2016), become a bestseller in it’s category.

Across the five days, you’ll spend time between our multiple studios. Day one will have specially curated workshops and panel discussions from some of our event partners such as Sennheiser & Neumann Berlin. Days two and three will be spent observing all the different stages of producing and recording a song – from microphone selection, live room set-up, in-studio arrangement decisions, tracking and recording session management. Day four will be spent mixing down the track with Sylvia in Bay Owl Studio A.

On Day five, we have a very special guest lined up, with whom we’ll master Sylvia’s mix end-to-end. We’ll end the masterclass with another specially curated workshop, gear giveaways like a pair of Neumann NDH 30’s and an open Q&A with Sylvia and the professional musicians part of the session.

You’ll leave with insights and an understanding of the processes and considerations behind sessions at Bay Owl Studios that have previously been unseen by the public.
